Four Types of FIBC: How Are They Classified

Jul. 06, 2022

First, FIBC stands for Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container or bulk bag. Typically, these FIBC bags can hold about 2,000 to 4,000 pounds. However, these dimensions may vary depending on customer requirements and preferences. The bulk bag and bulk bag industry can be confusing. We're here to simplify it for you.

Classified by charge

Typically, those who use FIBC bags are concerned about the control of static electricity, i.e., when the charge within certain materials is not balanced. When these bags are filled or discharged quickly with fine powders, it can lead to static buildup. Preventing or removing the charge is critical when packaging any type of combustible or flammable material or when combustible dust may be present in the environment.

Four Types of FIBC: How Are They Classified

Type A Bags

Type A bags do not provide any form of protection from static electricity and should therefore never be used for the storage and transport of any flammable material. These types of bags are typically made of woven polypropylene. type A bags are also typically made of fabrics that are not inherently conductive.
Type A bags can be safely used to transport non-combustible materials. Under no circumstances should flammable gases or solvents be placed in close proximity to these bags.
Do not use Type A bags to transport any type of flammable product.

Type B Bags

These FIBCs have a low breakdown voltage of typically no more than 6 kV. This is very effective in preventing ignition of explosive dust-air mixtures. However, these bags do not dissipate static electricity and therefore cannot be called "antistatic".
Type B bags are ideal for transporting dry and flammable powders. They can be transported very safely. However, remember that flammable gases or solvents should not be placed near the bags.
Type B bags do not have any interwoven materials with conductive properties.

Type C bags

This is also known as a conductive jumbo bag and is made of fabric that is not inherently conductive but has interwoven conductive threads. type C bags are safe for use in environments where explosive gases or dusts are present in the surrounding area.
Remember, they must remain grounded during the filling and emptying of these bags.
Combustible powder materials can be safely transported in these Type C FIBC bags. In addition, these Type C FIBC bags can be used safely in the presence of flammable gases or solvents.

Type D Bags

These are also known as dissipative FIBC bags and are typically made of antistatic materials. It consists of antistatic and dissipative yellow wire. These bags do not actually need to be grounded.
These materials prevent incendiary sparks from occurring. Combustible materials can be easily packaged, stored and transported in these types of bags.
Do not use them with surfaces covered with grease or water, as they are electrically conductive materials.

Coated

FIBC bags are used in a variety of industries and for many different applications. The type of product you will be storing and shipping will determine if you need coated or uncoated bags. Coated FIBCs are manufactured with a polypropylene film laminate to provide moisture, dust and weave stability.
Transport and storage of dry and free-flowing products in granular, powder or crystal form, such as flour, detergents or salt; fine minerals such as sand and sugar; various chemicals, glass, steel, etc.

Uncoated

Uncoated FIBCs do not have the laminate layer that coated bags have. Their woven construction allows air to pass through. Various woven designs are available for highly specialized air permeability and ventilation applications.
Uncoated bags are typically used for products that require breathability, food products such as potatoes, onions, peanuts, nuts, coffee beans, etc.; minerals such as rocks, gravel, sand, etc.
